Il Molino Terramadre is a small property, nestled discretely between some acclaimed parcels of terroir to the South West of Montalcino. These ancient soils form a detailed patchwork, separated by ridges and valleys that have formed over the centuries creating a unique microclimate. The vines are oriented north, north-east, benefitting from the cooler morning sun and we are convinced this is an important factor to promote steady, even ripening of our grapes and a resulting balance in our wines.

There are two distinct vineyard sites planted exclusively to Sangiovese that lie next to one another, but are quite different in terms of soil structure

There are two distinct vineyard sites planted exclusively to Sangiovese that lie next to one another, but are quite different in terms of soil structure

The first, planted in 2013 has a clay base with a very high proportion of marine deposits, shells and fossils. Here the vines are now coming of age, which is a pleasure to witness.

The second parcel, planted in 2020 has a natural soil composition full of rocks that can also be found in the bed of the tributaries of the River Ombrone and are highly characteristic of this area.  The peculiarity of this rock is that it is an agglomerate of stones melded together with calcium and this will define the Molino style further as grapes from this vineyard enter the cellar.

The dense, protective woodland influences our microclimate hugely

Il Molino benefits from dense and protective woodland surrounding the property, this influences our microclimate hugely, as does the proximity of the dormant volcano Mt. Amiata which has a commanding role, calling in the clouds and sharing its energy. To this, we add the influence of the Tyrrenian Sea, with its essential breezes that arrive when needed to keep the vines well ventilated.

Our approach is based on farming that not only adheres to organic principles but becomes integrated into the ecosystem

Organic certification is a significant step away from conventional farming and its use of chemicals. Our work in the vineyard is aimed at preserving biodiversity and the health of the plant and soil. This is the reason that we draw inspiration from biodynamic practices which stimulate and reinforce the entire life cycle that characterises the territory. The synergy with bees and pollinators adds a new dimension to the vineyard, creating a sustainable and circular benefit.

Adapting to the ever evolving climate, we make choices based on close observation

Working in a highly connected, collaborative manner, we are fortunate to be helped by experts such as Matteo, who follows both the vineyards and the winemaking, and Federico who gives great support in the cellar. We are mindful and adaptive to the ever evolving climate, making humble choices based on close observation, not feeling a necessity to follow the status quo but listening and fine tuning as we go.

This dynamic approach has resulted in vineyards that are teeming with life creating a resilience even to extremities such as late frosts and multiple vine pathologies
