”True magic is being surrounded by enchanted nature which, being almost free
from the presence of man, alone marks the passage of time.“

Located in Southern Tuscany, il Molino benefits from a unique microclimate

This small Podere that we decided to rename “Molino Terramadre” in honour of its humble origins and the abundant generosity and particularity of this parcel of land, is located in the southern part of Tuscany, in Montalcino, in the beautiful Val d’Orcia.  Its position benefits from a unique microclimate, influenced by multiple factors: exposure to the Mediterranean breeze, the proximity of Mt. Amiata which with its 1730m elevation has a domineering role influencing our microclimate, being surrounded by thick, biodiverse rich woodland and by the Raunate stream which contributes to the fertility of the area.

Whilst the history is not very well documented, we know il Molino was built in 1877 alongside the Raunate, benefiting both from the proximity of the stream and the then important new transport route it provided. Its activity as a water mill was quite shortlived and in the following years the stream lost the volume of water necessary to operate the blades all year round.

From 1920 onwards, the mill ceased to function and the structure was used as a colonial house, hosting the farming families of Campo Giovanni, who also followed the needs of the Castello di Argiano estate.

Around 1960, it was completely abandoned and in 2009, in conditions of total neglect, the new property realised its potential and a lenthy restoration process began. The renowned architect Marco Pignattai defined it as “a powerful and mysterious ruin” and with patience and meticulous work over a five year period, he managed to restore the mill to its ancient beauty.

During this latter period, the Podere was enriched by the planting of the first vineyard by one of Montalcino’s most acclaimed winemakers, and by an emblematic lavender meadow sown in a radial form.

The ecosystem has remained largely untapped and untamed in this protected environment

To date, the Raunate stream (a tributary of the Ombrone river) continues to flow next to the property for most of the year and the small valley around the stream, surrounded by coppiced woods, has always provided a safe refuge for wildlife.

And so, whilst custodians have come and gone over the centuries at Il Molino, the ecosystem has remained largely untapped and untamed in this secluded and protected environment.

”From day one, il Molino gave us unique but also familiar emotions, as if it has always been destined to welcome us.“

From the very beginning, it has become an integral part of our lives, giving us the opportunity to rediscover our roots, buried by many years we have spent abroad in large cities.

The first vineyard was planted in 2013 with the first vintage in 2019

The potential of this parcel of land had already been well identified but its first real vintage was not until 2019. The diligence, experience and patience of dear friend and agronomist Matteo Gentili and the precious support of Loriano Monaci have been essential in maximising the potential of the small vineyard. Since 2019 the vineyard has produced a generous harvest that never ceases to surprise us with its quality.

Welcome Brunello… and Bianca!

We welcome our gorgeous Falabella ponies, Brunello and Bianca. They are not simply a beautiful new addition, but will also be instrumental in helping aerate and fertilise the soil, while keeping the grass in check!

Our main purpose is the protection of and respect for the environment around us

We recognise fully that we are at the beginning of this journey and each learning is combined with a dose of humility and attention. The interaction between the microclimate and the territory gives life to an abundance of flora and fauna, which we are determined not only to protect but above all to study and encourage. Our main purpose is the protection of and respect for the environment around us, the vineyard takes on an ecological and synergistic dimension rather than being driven by economics.
